8 Steps to Conscious Eating

Conscious eating is not about strict diets.  Instead it outlines a new way of approaching food and the emotions that go along with overeating.  Here are some simple steps to a more healthful relationship with food.

 1.      Practice Radical Self-Acceptance - No longer beat yourself up about overeating.  The next time you get those feelings and eat, ask yourself, "I must need something, what am I feeling and how can I meet that need differently?"  Love yourself completely and feel proud every time that you are successful!

 2.      Drink Plenty of Water - Our bodies are made up of 98% water.  It makes sense to keep ourselves hydrated at all times.  It is good for our skin, joints, muscles, circulation and for balancing the energy in the body.  Drink a glass before meals to and feel refreshed!

3.      Explore Food Cravings - Learn to recognize the difference between a craving for spinach and a craving for ice cream.  A hankering for spinach likely means your body needs iron or another nutrient found in leafy greens.  But a craving for ice cream does not mean your body is in dire need of butter fat.  More likely, it means you are experiencing and emotional or spiritual hunger.  Learning to identify these hungers is the key to building a better relationship with food.

4.      Learn to Relax - Learn how to breathe fully, and all day long.  By the time a binge is about to happen, it is too late.  Emotions and stress may be running high.  Breathing fully all day keeps stress levels manageable, and ferocious chocolate and donut cravings at bay.

5.      Take Three Long, Deep Breaths Before You Eat - Do this every time you sit down for a meal.  It will help you relax your body, focus on the food, and put an end to mindless feeding.  It is easy to do anywhere, in any situation, and it works.

6.      Chew Your Food Slowly When You Can - Try it for one meal a day or even twice a week in the beginning.  Consistent practice will help make it a new positive habit so that when you are busy, in a social setting, or eating on the run, you'll still be aware that you are tasting and chewing while doing your body a favor.

7.      Feel Your Feelings - Try to recognize what you are feeling instead of simply stuffing your feelings.  Consider support through a workshop, therapist, or group.  When we don't know why we are eating, or what we are trying to feel, we go into compulsive mode.  Any exercise is also a great way to get in touch with your mind and body.   Go for a walk!

8.      Find Ways to Reward Yourself, You Deserve it! - So often eating has to do with feeding a hungry heart or soul.  Instead of filling your soul with Double Stuff Oreos, you ask yourself what you love doing and do it.  Used to love painting?  Pick up a brush and dabble.  If dancing is your passion, sign up for a refresher class.  Remember what you love and go for it!

"Here is the latest update - 7 pounds off the middle baby! I can't believe how easy it is to pick the right foods. It's like my body just knows what it needs. My muscles also hurt a lot less since I am drinking so much water. I am sending my friends to you man, this worked out great!"

- M.C. Pacific Beach

"Last night when we got in, we went grocery shopping to restock our fridge. We worked out a meal plan for the whole week, and didn't buy anything bad or junky. This morning I got up and had breakfast (for the first time in ages), and then did as you suggested and jumped on the treadmill for 1 minute, which turned into half an hour! Both my husband and I are really happy with what we got out of your session. Thanks so much for helping us to turn our lives around; you've really worked a miracle on us :)"
