Beating Insomnia

Having trouble sleeping at night?  Waking up in the middle of the night, say around 3am?  You are definitely not alone.  As we all know, we are much more effective and focused with a good nights sleep.  However, we may fall into the rut where we are not "tired" at the end of the night, but get up in the morning and feel like we need another eight hours!  To create the most energy and stamina through the day, we need to take control of our sleep time.  The following suggestions are intended to assist you in adjusting your evening patterns and reaching your goal of a restful and rejuvenating nights sleep.

1.  Make time for a nap - A power nap during the day will recharge your energy, balance any stress and calm your nerves.  You will be more productive and focused throughout the day, leading to a much more peaceful evening of sleep.

2.  Organize your next day - Get your "to-do" lists prepared for the next day so that you don't stay awake at night worrying about tomorrow.

3.  Don't eat after 7pm - Would you give a child ice cream before bed?  No way!  When we eat before bed we are fueling our bodies to stay awake and work.  If you are starving by the end of the night, you may consider adjusting your eating habits during the day.

4.  Don't exercise after 7pm - Can you imagine running a child through the park and then telling her to sleep?  After a workout your muscles are taught, the blood is pumping and the heart is racing.  The body is ready to go, not sleep!  If this is you, consider sleeping earlier and working out in the morning.  You will be pumped all day!

5.  Change patterns before bed - Review what you do before bed and make changes to anything you find that may not be beneficial to your sleep.

6.  Keep the bed sacred - The bed is for sleeping, light reading and fun times with your partner.  Leave work, studying and eating for separate rooms, otherwise you are telling your brain that this is a place of activity when you really want sleep.

7.  Talk to your partner - Snoring, movement or heat from the other side of the bed keeping you awake?  Kiss them on the forehead, tell them you love them and sleep on the sofa!  Don't feel bad for taking care of your sleep needs.

8.  Take time to dream - If you wake up in the middle of the night; realize that there are no distractions and no worries, consider this time alone as a chance to dream and create the things you would like for your ideal future.  Think big!

9.  Take control - Mind racing in bed?  Get those thoughts under control.  You can either let them lead you, or guide your mind and body to a restful sleep.

"I had no idea how powerful the mind was.  I can clearly see how much of my thought patterns and habits impacted my body.  Louise Hay has it right and so do you.  I can't express to you how grateful I am for your insight and assistance.  I feel like the weights have been lifted and I am a new person!"
